Is it rude to be on speaker phone in public?

Hell yes!  Speak softly and put phone to your ear and use ear buds.  I think in some way people like to feel important and want others to hear that they are closing that "big deal" etc.  Sometimes I'll comment on that person's conversation to which they'll respond, "do you mind?".  And of course I'll say, "why yes I do".

Yes, this is absolutely disrespectful. They make all kinds of headphones such as airpods and wireless options that allow people to be on the phone without having to hold the phone and let other people hear their business. People don't need to hear other people's conversations.

my phone recently became really hard to hear so now I have to talk to people on speaker, out of courtesy if someone calls I will walk away from people or walk around the store and lower the volume and or decide if the call is even worth it.  I guess it comes down to social etiquette which is based on each persons beliefs, but I think most of us are not fans of speakers in public.

This is definitely an exception, but I’ve got an IPhone 6S and unless my phone is on speaker, I can’t hear anyone on the phone. Just wanted to offer an opposing side

Gotta keep the noise level down people. Humans are some of the loudest, most obnoxious creatures on the planet. Talking openly like your phone is a walkie-talkie is a bad look too. Shhhhhh!! And I don't wanna know why she won't go out with you, why you didn't get the job, or why so-and-so is an asshole.....LOL!

I think with all the technology we have now a days there just no reason to need to be on speaker in public. I get there are occasions it may happen, but just seems to way to often of occurence.

it is super annoying I don't want to hear other people's conversations speaker phones are made for in a private setting what you need to get is a Bluetooth 4 in public settings or just use the phone the proper way no speaker in public

Rude,  but sometimes interesting (and entertaining) to listen to conversations!!  While waiting for a delayed flight!!
