What is the bigger factor in making a college decision?

On some level its going to depend on how good the prospect coming out is and how they are regarded by different universities in the recruiting process. But, there are obviously schools whose programs are more highly regarded than others, whose conferences are deep in talent, and who consistently are ranked, on TV, and do well in the NCAAs. Most players would take the top ranked D1/Power 5 conference "reputation" schools like these over an NAIA draw where a player would "fit" and be the man and drop 40 every night. But it's likely in the end a combination of both, but certainly dependent on a variety of factors including how good they are and are recruited.

Can’t imagine changing my major and attending a school for its reputation... and besides it’s gotta feel right or it just won’t work.

If you don't fit the reputation won't help.  If you fit you can make the reputation.

A school can have whatever reputation, but if its not a fit, be it personality, coaches, size, etc... it just doesn't work and likely to be unhappy there.

many players choose a school with less notoriety  if there's another option that will get them more actual playing time versus sitting on the bench at a bigger school

Always the fit. I don't care how great the school's reputation, if the fit ain't there, it's gotta be no go.
