Should an offensive fumble through the endzone result in a touchback for the defense?

Worst rule in all of sports. If you fumble the ball and it goes out at the 1 you get to keep the ball but just cause the spot it goes out is the endzone it is a turnover. How does that make any sense? The offense should get the ball at the spot they fumbled it. So if they fumble at the 3 and it goes out in the endzone they should get it at the 3, if they fumble at the 1 and it goes out in the endzone they should get it at the 1, etc. If a fumble in the endzone is a turnover then a fumble that goes out of bounds not in the endzone should be a turnover because the offense didn't make a bigger mistake just because it went out in the endzone. I understand that the defense made a play so the argument would be that the defense should be rewarded but the problem with that argument is that by using that logic a fumble going out of bounds at like the 1 or the 40, etc. Should be a turnover 2. I believe it should either always be a turnover or never a turnover when the ball goes out of bounds it makes no sense for it to depend where it goes out of bounds whether it is a turnover or not.

The rule has been in for ever . It’s a touchback. Should of been a penalty though

Those are the rules. And of all the rules in the NFL, I hardly find that one worth wasting any time on. It doesn’t happen but a handful of times all season, so JUST HOLD ON TO THE FOOTBALL! If any tweak were to be made on that rule, I’d say maybe since there is no defensive recovery in that instance that the team should keep possession but have to go back to the 20 YD line. Ponder THAT why don’t you.

Always felt this is the dumbest thing, especially if you consider the KC/CLE game, which was the difference in the game. Maybe the offense should be put back to the 20 or something, but the other team getting the ball makes no sense.

The rule sucks... should be loss of down and go back to the original line of scrimmage. Giving the ball up seems way to harsh.

ONLY if the defense recovers it, otherwise it should go back to the spot of the fumble.

All fair points, we will never know. BUT we can agree, that fumble, touchback, and the next KC drive for 3 points, impacted the outcome. Mahomes injury could have, but Cle did not take advantage, mostly due to Henne’s cool.

That’s why I said he could of effect the outcome, not that it did . I believe KC wins either way. Who knows is KC is behind they don’t run a QB option and Mahones doesn’t get hurt

The anyone information Chad Henne as a true Freshman QB at Michigan replaces Tom Brady . Actually he wasn’t supposed to start until his second year but Drew Henson the supposed starter signed a Baseball Contract.

The fumble and touchback in the Browns vs Chiefs game totally changed the outcome. It was a 10 point swing, in what became a 5 point game.

I have no problem celebrating after a TD but make sure you scored first . DUMMY

I believe where the ball is fumbled the team should get it back like Cleveland did but if it’s a Hot Dog Celebration situation the referee can asses a 15 yd penalty for Unsportsmanlike Conduct

Kinda one of the few times you feel like a penalty should have the potential to be called via the review. But it'd have to be something like only on a change of possension and have to be a Personal foul. That ball should have never been a fumble, but getting hit in the head has the tendency to make you drop the ball.

It’s pretty bad. In the end it cost CLE the game.
