I think it will work, but not specifically on its own in the near future. It's already hard now, but there definitely is a place for terrestrial radio in terms of local sports talk. It's a question of scale... and right now, digital isn't big enough on a local level to sustain on its own. But together, radio and digital can work and thrive if the business model is built as such. The key will be determining and understanding the "value" of each. Right now, there is a disconnect with the advertising community. Many don't understand or even knowing the detail and accuracy that can be provided with digital analytics.

It may still be viable in 5 years, but not in the longterm.  Nichecasting is already replacing broadcasting at a much lower cost with better advertising results.

Probably not but I think you hold onto it as long as you can. Once AM is done, you can take your younger  listeners with you and hope that the older generation gets on board with modern technology.  I love local AM radio especially 1090 where I get it in Los Angeles. I get kept informed on the SD scene. If I need to get a broader national point of view, I’ll listen to podcasts like one of my favorites which is the Dan Patrick show.

Streaming is the way of the future.  AM is going to be as obsolete as a Boombox, Walkman or CD player very soon.  Ditch the tower and continue with the streaming.  It's better sound quality anyway!
