Has the current climate in America changed your opinion of social injustice?

For me this is a big YES. Admittedly I did not understand or appreciate Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling protest, and as I look back on it now, given what has happened, I feel less than as compassionate as I should have been, and will be more compassionate going forward. One thing I really like to hear in this entire discussion, black people leaning on white people who want change, and equality! I want to be part of the positive change! That doesn’t mean we all have to agree about everything, nor do we need to be bullied into saying things we don’t believe, because we will be attacked on twitter, the time has come for open, honest, respectful dialogue, so we can learn from, and help one another!

I'm glad we're finally talking about it something definitely needs to get done

I would say more than anything I am more aware of it and think about my actions more than I have in the past.

Differences measured by degree have always been imbued in power relations and oppression. Differences in kind are about when two different bodies come together and become something different, a politics for sure, but a politics of transformation. That is what we are seeing today and have many times in human history. In my experiences in life and as someone who has studied and made a career as a cultural anthropologist and geographer, representatives from the traditional communities, ethnic groups, and Native American communities that I engage with mostly just want to know what is in your heart. Are you capable of listening? Do you care about their struggles and their perspectives on life and what they are striving for? Are you capable of compassion and empathy and withholding judgment? Ethnocentrism is an important concept - look it up! An important question for this panel might simply be - what are you trying to accomplish and on behalf of whom?

Let’s see in six months. Six weeks? When the media finds a new target, will this be headline news? Why does it take a death to make it to the news?

Sorry, I have always respected all sides and while I always hope to better understand those I disagree with it has not changed my position on social justice.

It hasn’t really changed my view, I’ve always known it’s been bad at various levels in various communities and social/cultural environments. Not necessarily experiencing it first hand as a white male growing up in a primarily ethnic neighborhood but experiencing the injustices through close friends and association... never feeling the ability to make a difference other than give and receive support of only those close to me.

What I feel has changed is the ability to connect, share, expose, and educate our diverse cultures and experiences through social media platforms. The momentum of change is powerful and only intensified today. People are witnessing the injustices and actually listening and supporting one another.

The younger generations are here, informed, equipped, loud and aren’t willing to accept status quo. They’ll make more impact in their lifetimes than any other generation in the past and hope we as parents support them and they as parents support their children to someday end this BS.
