Great question. History shows you can't go wrong with owning a home. But remember u don't own it the bank does and the equity isn't yours til u sell.  2006-2008 was sad times for people.

I've rented and owned houses. Threw lots of money away renting and fixing other peoples houses with nothing to show for it in the end. Yes it had great views but you can't own the views.
I've put time and $ into my house in Temecula which we love and have no regrets. I can do whatever I want to this house and I have, couldn't do that in a rental and the investment I've made is truly that in this house and worth every penny. I rented far too long and wasted a lot of $$$$
And locations are super important!!! So it does matter where you live. I got out of high priced OC, no regrets!
