Governor Newsom joins volunteers in conducting San Diego County homeless count

Is Gov. Newsom doing the right thing to fix California's homeless issue?

No, homelessness is a mental health issue

Yes, he needs to continue spending money on housing

Seems like were just throwing money at a problem not actually finding a solution. On top of that some of the housing projects I've heard have just had a ridiculous cost for what was really being produced.

If I have to be honest, I don't think the problem of homelessness gets solved without addressing both sides here - but since there hasn't been an argument for housing I will throw one in. In San Diego, the median home price is a staggering $594,00, median 1 bedroom rents are ~$1800/month, while average incomes are about $79,000. Do I think that the working class in San Diego is struggling with homelessness? No, but I think there is a ripple effect as you look to the housing supply and the increasing demand. When the working class can't afford to live in San Diego because we are SO behind on inventory, housing costs go up and those in the low and extremely low income classes start to suffer more.

I can see how housing helps, but it is certainly a mental health/addiction issue first and foremost. I don’t know what the answer is but San Diego downtown is slowly becoming San Fran. Something must be done soon.

The homeless crisis was govt created. In 1996 a Chicago lawyer sued CITI bank for mortgage discrimination-->created income stated loans-->down payments and interest payments(no principal payments)--> caused prices to sky rocket and then raise rates to confiscate the houses and 'hopefully' collapse the economy. During this time house building stopped but people turned 18 everyday. Plus you infiltrate hispanics into society with illegal 'govt promises' (section 8, Welfare, drivers lic etc) and call them sanctuary cities. So the corrupt politicians start money laundering money by saying "we need to raise taxes to fix the homeless crisis"... The only way to fix this is to arrest the Gov, mayors, police chiefs, kick out hispanics, and make building permits easier to get which will return the society in equilibrium. Hopefully-lowering property taxes.

there are some people that need help on a temporary basis but too many dont want any help and prefer to be on the streets. Not sure what would be best for them. we are throwing away money if we dont find a solution. The problem is getting bigger.

If he’s so passionate about housing the homeless, let them live with him! Or he can use some of his money to house them.

I'm an independent. I hate each party independently. Just wanted to make that clear. This state has a problem, and the good people of either party need to come together and try to solve this homeless problem.

an obamacare requirement was to close majority of the mental hospitals. There is a 'cause' or crisis' created by all the 'free stuff' democrats offer. There is a price to pay for everything.

Exactly, and where was he mayor... San Francisco, so now he is taking his sterling track record there and preaching to the rest of us? Gimme a break.... it's not hard to connect the dots on the cities with the worst homeless problems... SF, LA, Portland, Seattle.... and now San Diego.... thanks to silly policies trying to treat the symptom instead of the root cause

Also add in vaccinations-flu shots to create mental health issues. There is a reason why there are no McDonalds is rich/expensive neighborhoods.. Cigarettes are lab altered to make them more addictive. .. but yet, get rid of plastic straws?..

It also should be mentioned that SD zoning laws make it incredibly difficult to build dense, efficient housing projects. Developers have only so many levers to pull, one being rents. If SD would lift some of the outdated zoning restrictions in urban areas and allow for more dense housing, we'd be able to fulfill more of SD's unit count, and projects would be able to add affordable components without suffering huge losses and making it impossible to get funding/backing
