Make an appointment! The first time I just rolled in without making any appointment. Waited 5 hours and they never got to me. Second time, I was wiser. It was pretty easy to do. However, the process is pretty confusing. I got a letter saying I didn’t provide the right documents, which I did. I had to fill out one more form by mail. Typical government efficiency.

Shockingly this was much easier then I though it was going to be. I went in with the mind set that I could be there a few hours, but ultimately I think I was there maybe 40 minutes, and half that was waiting either to see the person and/or to get my photo taken (I was also getting my license renewed and had to go it for a Eye Test and Picture). Additionally, I did not have an appointment. On top of this my Wife, Mom, and Dad have all done it now and have had a similar positive experience and been there less then 45 minutes.My advice to make it easier though is:If possible going during the Week not Saturday and either first thing or mid day/early afternoon.Go to the DMV's website and go through there list of required documents. From what I saw 90% of people who had trouble when I was in is because they either didn't bring any document or brough the wrong ones. You need two forms of ID (IE. Passport, Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, Othre) and two forms of Address verification on it (IE. a Bill, License renewal, Credit Card Statement, pretty much anything that you got sent in the mail that has your name and current address)Make sure to complete the Real ID Application online (yes there is a digital application you have to do). If you don't do this at home and bring the verification info, you will have to do it there which will slow you down more. It is super easy. Also this is the other thing that I noticed screwed people when they came in.If you have any special requirements to be able to drive (IE Glasses, or letter from your Optomologist because of a stigmitism or similar issue, or something else). Bring it, because there going to ask.Don't be an idiot. If you bring all this and semi organized they get you in and out pretty quick. Most people I saw that came in and got sent home was because they weren't prepared. Go online and read there directions on the rear ID.Good luck, curious how everyone else has fared.

Don’t need one, I have a passport And passport card and since it’s a federal ID I don’t need to hassle with the real ID crap.

Must not be as busy. I'm in north county. The Oceanside branch is crazy busy. Although I hate the dmv, I have to say all the employees working there were super nice. Must suck to work somewhere that everyone hates.

My parents went to the Clairemont DMV too which is usually the worse.

Crazy, my Wife, mom, Dad, and myself went it with no appointment and was easy. Also that blows on the documents.

Interesting and I know what you mean about the DMV. I was actually surprised at least on the Real ID how organized they were. It makes you wonder if they followed the same organization with everything else how much more Efficent they could be
