I usually operate from the notion that hiring decisions should be based on filling a particularly need and how they fit into the culture and staffing and business development plans for your company. If your cousin fills a staffing need and is able to add value and fits into your culture, absolutely! It's all about the company and establishing expectations.

All depends on the character of the family member... I’ve personally hired friends/family and in most cases it works out well. I’ve also turned down family/friends too (knowing it would be a disaster!). I’d avoid having them report to you tho, “sticky” situation regardless of how good they are.

It can work.  If they are not a direct report to you even better.  My company hired my daughter but she did not report to me.  She had to earn her way nothing was given to her.  Hopefully the same for your cousin.

I mean if they really are a good fit thats great, but this just seems to end up wrong more often then not, I feel like you end up compromising or settling for less. But like Bob said hope your relationship is stronger or your don't care cause hard/hurt feelings can be rough. 

I know a couple Subcontractors right now or recently who have hired family and the majority of them end up regretting it

Money and different lifestyle/life stages can definitely cause problems. The other thing I saw was that other employees struggle to give fair feedback because there worried about either (that you as the owner/boss not taking the feedback well/taking it persona and/or what said person will repeat to you).

I know, we're the same age and grew up together. You would think nothing could break that bond. But, money...
