Should the Padres sign Fernando Tatis, Jr. to a long term contact now or wait?

Christopher Moreno

VERIFIED

This guy is in a league with Mike Trout. Lock him up!

Bob Rauch

I would wait a little longer (maybe a few months or so) to see how consistent he is. After that, long term it is.

Lock him in next year for at least 8 years, $180-190 Million...PLEASE!

Pawpaw

Lock that Brutha up right now. He’s what makes the Padres exciting to watch. This was my point on why MLB and other sports should play.

Albert Long

Any player who gets a big contract falls off. On average they don’t produce after the big check.

Aaron Martin

Lock him up. He is a once in a generation stud. If you wait you won't be able to afford him later

Michael Johnson

The longer you wait the more money it’s going to cost

Stuart Left

He will bring younger fans to the park building a strong base for the future

Juan Ortiz

Give him a blank check, ownership in the team, key to the city.. give him whatever the hell he wants. He needs to be a padre for life.

The time is always sooner then later, they can do alot more similar to what the angels did with trout which was resign him before then end of his rookie contract for a reasonable but fair amount. Then a bigger one once hes a bit older and has proven his dominance.

Derrick McQuinn

Definitely, this is a no brainer, Fowler needs to show him some love....here's a great quote from Hosmer in the ESPN article: "He's 21 years old. And there's no question, he's the face of this franchise. And I think he's gonna be the face of this game very, very soon."

A few months won't matter really, but if he keeps playing at this clip, his tag is going up for sure with every game.

I don't know man, I love how a lot of Padre fans have forgotten that the last prospect in our system that was this good, was Roberto Alomar. He was dealt in 1990 for Tony Fernandez. Tatis might be better.

I sincerely hope that they don't mess this up and try to play hard ball and ride out his arbitration years.

Yeah, the terms will be interesting. Before Trout signed his 12 year/425 mil at age 27, he signed a 6 year/144 mil contract as a 21 year old, the same age Tatis is now. If they were willing to give a 24 year old Myers 80 mil and a 28 year old Hosmer 150 mil, you'd think they'd be willing to give a 21 year old Tatis Jr. 180-200 mil over six years (which is probably the range that they would be looking at). It could be worse, the Padres could go back to scraping by with grade B free agents to fill out the roster and losing.

I agree I was actually thinking that very thought as I was typing lol. It’s always easy to spend other people’s money.

You are correct Chris, if Padres are serious about winning and I think they are they need to sign Tatis to a long term deal.

I'm there with you AL, also, questions like this remind me that it is always easy as fans, to spend Fowler's money, haha! But this is the business they are in and if they are serious about winning and investing in their own players, they have to sign this guy long term. I'm surprised the local media hasn't been asking this question already.

Definitely, exactly what this organization and MLB needs!

Sure, but that usually happens for players signing 10 year deals at the age of 28. Tatis is only 21 with a decade of prime ball ahead of him if he stays healthy and hungry at least.
