The latitude afforded teams through the transfer portal can change the entire direction of a program. The NBA trading deadline is certainly significant but they have a few more variables in play that restrict what they can do relative to roster size and payroll. When I hear college coaches bemoaning the transfer portal as though it’s going to be D1 free agency, it usually comes from well-established coaches that don’t want their world turned upside down by a rival or a team that’s been a “have not” for too long.

The transfer portal is so important. Kids have more freedom to move within college sports, to find programs that are perceived to be a better fit, etc. and for the teams/coaches, the portal is how you recruit more experienced talent.

The NCAA transfer portal can change a good team to an amazing team with one addition and it doesn't have to be a incredible player. Texas Tech went to the national championship in 2019 because of the following:

Matt Mooney who did nothing at Air Force and made an impact at South Dakota. He came in and was a role player, nothing more, nothing less that Chris Beard needed.

Tariq Owens didn't make a splash at Tennessee or St. John's but was crucial to the success of the Red Raiders.
